Essential Daily Vitamins and Minerals

We do not eat the same foods every day, and on some days we may not eat enough of some of the vitamins and minerals we need. Studies have shown taking a daily vitamin and mineral supplement can benefit our overall health, and we recommend taking a daily multi-nutrient supplement that contains half the vitamins and minerals we commonly fall short of.

The main vitamins and minerals often deficient in the diet are Vitamins A, B12, C, D, E and M, and the minerals Calcium, Iodine, Iron and Potassium.

Omega-3

Omega-3 Oils are a type of Fatty Acid (FA) that have been shown to provide significant health benefits. Although abundant in oily fish and other foods, many of us, particularly on western diets, do not get enough and a daily supplement is recommended.

Protein and Amino Acids

Proteins have countless functions throughout the human body, from the building blocks of muscles to the immune system. Good quality protein from food is therefore vital for good health, and most of us get ours from meats, most of which are a complete protein source. Taking a good quality protein supplement, with a complete complex of the 20 Amino Acids that are the building blocks of all the proteins the body needs can be a good way to ensure we get these essential nutrients.

Antioxidants

Every day we are exposed to damage from cell oxidation inside our bodies, from the foods we eat and alcohol, to smoking, air pollutants, stress and physical exercise. Increasing our antioxidant intake through supplementation can have significant effects in protecting cells against the oxidative damage of free radicals. The main dietary antioxidants are Vitamins C and E, and the mineral Selenium. Nitric Oxide has also been shown to have significant antioxidant properties, while Beta-Carotene may also have antioxidant actions in larger quantities.

Fibre

Fibre is an essential part of our diets as it helps with the digestion of foods, the absorption of nutrients and the removal of waste products. Increasing Fibre intake in our diets has been a key health recommendation for many years now, and although we can get all the fibre we need from the foods we eat, for some of us this may not be possible or practical, so taking a daily fibre supplement can help maintain good digestive health.

Probiotics

The good bacteria in our digestive system is vital for our health and survival. It helps us to digest food and absorb nutrients as well as protect us against infections from unwanted microbes that we consume in our foods. This microbial ecosystem inside of us can often be disrupted at various points in our lives, and can be particularly compromised as we age. Taking a probiotic can help restore our natural levels of these essential bacteria.

Sports Nutrition

However, some are easier to obtain than others. TFB.com therefore recommends that everyone takes a supplement that contains at least half of the vitamins and minerals you need to supplement your daily, healthy diet. This is because we like to encourage people to focus on eating healthily, and if you do we don't believe that you need to take a supplement containing 100% of your daily vitamins and minerals. When combined with a healthy diet, a nutritional supplement that contains half your daily requirement of vitamins and minerals is enough for good health and avoid related diseases. Taking more is likely to waste your money.

The main vitamins and minerals that we need to be concerned about are Vitamin A, B12, C, D, M and the Minerals Calcium Iodine, Iron and Potassium. While the others are important, these are the most common in western diets that can be deficient (for more information on these, visit our nutrition section).

We also recommend taking a daily Omega-3 supplement. Omega-3 has been shown to have many health benefits, and while we can get plenty from foods such as oily fish, many of us, particularly in western diets, do not eat nearly enough on a regular basis.

For people who do not eat much meat, or who's meat quality is poor, we recommend taking a daily protein supplement that provides a good source of quality protein with at least all eight of the Essential Amino Acids.

Forever Daily

Forever Arctic Sea

Arctic Sea is one of the best Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplements on the market. The fish that provide the oils are sourced from arctic waters, where there are very few pollutants, and contains a 1:1 balance of EPA:DHA Omega-3, with 100mg of each in every softgel. Each softgel also contains Vitamin E to prevent oxidation of the oils and keep them fresh.

Forever Calcium

Recommended Daily Calcium intake from the diet is much higher than for most other minerals in order to maintain good bone health, and because of its molecular weight it is difficult to combine high levels of calcium in a multi-mineral supplement. Vitamin C

Vitamin C is essential for many function in the body, but it is also a highly powerful antioxidant. For normal body function, it is recommended to take 90mg/day, which is fairly easy to obtain if eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. However, taking up to 400mg/day has been shown to give significant health benefits because of its antioxidant effects, while any more than this is likely to offer little more benefit. Eating a healthy, varied diet as set out by TFB.com will should provide about 200mg/day, and therefore we recommend to supplement this with about another 200mg/day. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is mainly used as an antioxidant in the body. While 15mg/day is advised to prevent deficiency and disease, 134mg/day (200 IU) is recommended to obtain full antioxidant benefits of this vitamin. This higher amount is difficult to obtain from the diet alone, and few general nutritional supplements contain this amount either. We therefore recommend taking a supplement that is specifically aimed at providing this level of Vitamin E supplementation. It is important that the 134mg/day is obtained from natural source D- Alpha-Tocopherol form of Vitamin E. For more information on vitamin E, click here.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is a general term for several related compounds, mainly used to refer to ones involved in vision and regulation of DNA. Therefore there are several forms of vitamin A, and a standard measure, known as the the Retinol Activity Equivalents (RAE), is used to measure the amount retinol each form provides. The RDA for vitamin A is 900mcg (3000IU) for men, and 700mcg (2333IU) for women. For women who are breast feeding, it is recommended to take up to 1300 mcg (4,333IU) a day. This can be difficult to obtain in the diet, and a supplement may be needed. However, a supplement that contains preformed vitamin A should contain no more then 2500 IU each day as it has been shown that several adverse effects may occur at higher levels.

Post Exercise Recovery

After we finish exercise, the body starts to recover and adapt to the physical stresses it has just performed. To do this effectively and efficiently, the body needs nutrients as quickly as possible. However, duriong exercise our digestive systems are put on 'standby' and takes time to get fully up to speed. This is why we often don't feel like eating until some time after exercise. It is also often not practical to prepare food that covers all the nutrients we need straight after we have finished exercise.

It has been shown that getting nutrients into the body within an hour after exercise, when our bodies are at their most ready to use the nutrients, can significantly improve post exercise recovery rates and enhance the training effects of exercise.

This is probably the most beneficial effect of taking a protein shake supplement. Most of us do not need the additional protein from these shakes, we get plenty in our diets, even Olympic Weight lifters. However, getting protein into the body as soon as possible after exercise can help increase the rate of recovery after exercise that places a high load on muscles, and high quality protein shakes can be a very effective way of doing this. One serving of most protein products will be enough, though.

It is also beneficial to get electrolytes, such as sodium and potassium, antioxidants Vitamin A, E and Nitric Oxide, other essential nutrients like calcium, and carbohydrate to replenish energy stores as soon as possible after exercise. Taking these in a supplement can often be the most efficient way to get these essential nutrients into the body to aid the recovery process.

Pre-Exercise Preparation

The best way to get the nutrition you need for your exercise goals is through good, well planned nutrition. This will put you in the best position to get the most out of your training. However, there are two areas that have been shown to give a potential boost to our training goals which can be helped by supplements.

The first is an energy 'top up' from caffeine. Although not an energy source itself, Caffeine has been shown to increase energy supply and can help improve performance. If your exercise goal is maximum performance (ie exercising in a high energy state)then taking a small quantity of natural source caffeine 1-2 hours before exercise can be beneficial.

The second area of potential benefit is taking protein before strength training. If an exercise session involves weight or other strength training of high load and intensity but without raising heart rate significantly for long durations (ie strength training with long rest intervals rather than circuits) we can take protein within an hour before our training session. This is because our digestive system will remain more functional, and will digest the protein while we exercise, which will make it available for our bodies more quickly than if we eat the protein afterwards. A protein supplement can be a more effective and convenient way to do this.
